The first signs of BJP going on the backfoot emerged with Congress’s 'PayCM' campaign, which highlighted the 40% commission charge levelled against its government by the contractors association. The suicide of Belagavi-based contractor Santosh Patil only added fuel to the fire. BJP also failed to gauge the distress among the people, especially in rural areas, due to the rise in prices of cooking gas and essential commodities.
